Baby Girl Dies After Being Mauled By Family’s Pet Dog In West Midlands

A seven-month-old baby girl dies after being bitten on the head by her family’s pet dog in Coventry, West Midlands, police confirms.

The Guardian reports that police officers were called to the Coventry property on the afternoon of June 16.

Police officers and ambulance crews arrived within minutes and immediately responded to the scene at around 3:00 PM.

“[The] baby girl had received serious injuries to her head after being bitten by the family’s dog inside the home,” a spokesperson tells BBC.

According to the statement released by the West Midlands Police (WMP), the baby girl, identified as Elle Doherty, “received treatment at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital for further treatment.”

BBC also reveals that Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance had also been called to assist at the scene.

“Tragically, she died a short time later. Our thoughts remain with her family at this devastating time,” the police statement reveals.

The police also reveals that the family dog isn’t classified as a dangerous breed, was removed from the family’s home, and was “humanely destroyed”.

Earlier, no other information about the dog has been released by the police. However, the following week, the dog was revealed to have been registered as a Belgian Malinois, The Independent reports.

WMP also released an earlier statement saying, “We are in the early stages of our investigation and our inquiries are continuing.”

But a few days after, WMP released a statement saying, “Following a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the death of a baby who tragically died after being bitten by a pet dog at a home in Coventry, detectives are now satisfied that there have been no criminal offences.”
