As a form of punishment, five boys from Chhatrapati Shivaji Inter College, a government-aided school, were exposed to a cold water bath at a pumping set in Faridpur, Bareilly district. According to the Hindustan Times, the incident occurred when principal Ranvijay Singh identified the students during the morning assembly, alleging they had shown up at school without having had a bath.

Principal Singh made it clear that the goal was to inculcate in students a feeling of cleanliness for a better lifestyle rather than imposing punishment. Around ten in the morning, the five boys were brought to the school pumping set during the break, told to take off their uniforms, and take cold water baths. Following that, they redressed in their uniforms and were forced to form a line. A video of the incident was recorded by Principal Singh in which he stressed upon the importance of showering before school was shared across other school groups. From there, it became popular on social media. In the video, the children were spotted shivering after taking a cold-water bath. Singh claimed he was merely promoting good behaviour among kids. He went on to say in the video that judging by their reactions, the students had great fun.

“On Monday, we checked nails, shoes, uniforms, etc during assembly and found five students who had come without taking a bath. During the interval, we took them to the school pumping set, told them to take their uniforms off and take a bath,” Singh was quoted by HT.

Parents of the students, however, voiced discontent with the approach, especially with having their kids take a cold water bath outdoors. They claimed that, given the district’s below-average minimum temperatures, students should not have been forced to take such a bath just for failing to take their morning showers before school. The lowest temperature in Bareilly was 3.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday and 5.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, adding to the students’ suffering.
